WELCOME TO THE SCHOOL NUTRITION SERVICES

“Providing Healthy School Meals which meet the needs of a student’s academic and physical well - being and improving lives through smart food choices”

At the School District of Monroe, we know that good nutrition and learning go hand in hand.

The Nutrition Services department is made up of a team of food and nutrition professionals that are dedicated to the student’s health, well- being and their ability to learn. Meals, foods and beverages sold and served at schools meet state and federal requirements which are based on the USDA Dietary Guidelines (http://cnpp.usda.gov/dietaryguidelines.htm).

We provide students with access to a variety of affordable and appealing foods that meet the health and nutrition needs of students. The USDA has developed New Meal Patterns for School Nutrition Departments.

Raising the Bar for School Meals

In an effort to continually improve the quality of the menus we offer to our student’s , we are raising the bar on the standards of our school meals. Our focus Is on enhancing the diet of students with more nutritious choices here at school and by providing nutrition education that will help students form healthy habits that last a lifetime!

We encourage you to follow similar healthy guidelines at home

Key enhancements include an increase in the availability of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fat-free and low fat fluid milk in our meals. We are reducing the levels of sodium, saturated fat and eliminating added trans- fat in meals. We do not supersize our meals, but instead strive to meet the nutrition needs of students within their age specific calorie requirements.

You can grow nutrition at home

Food gardening allows you to see, touch, smell and taste ‘nutrition”. A garden is also an excellent way to learn the origin of our foods and help gain a better understanding and appreciation for the environment.

Gardens produce results that you can see, touch, and taste. Children are eager to try the “fruits” of their labor. There is nothing like the taste of fresh and flavorful vegetables you have grown yourself.

We look forward to another great year. The department is always open to feedback and suggestions. Please call at 328-7260 or email at ericekum@monroe.k12.wi.us.
